PURPOSE:To obtain the subject polymer excellent in mechanical strengths such as impact resistance and nondestructivity and useful as a material for containers, etc., in the fields of electronic materials, etc., by heating a specific polyarylene sulfide in a gaseous phase oxidizing atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:This polymer is obtained by heating a polyarylene sulfide in (C) a gaseous phase oxidizing atmosphere. The polyarylene sulfide is obtained by reacting (A) an alkali metal sulfide such as Na2S with (B) a dihalogenated aromatic compound such as p-dichlorobenzene in an organic amide solvent such as N-methylpyrrolidone, while the gaseous phase part of a reactor is cooled during the reaction for condensing a part of the gaseous phase in the reactor and subsequently recycled to a liquid phase. The atmosphere C is preferably an oxygen-containing gas atmosphere having an oxygen concentration of 0.5-50vol.%, and the heating treatment temperature under the atmosphere is preferably 100-280 deg.C. |
