PURPOSE:To improve quality of an image interpolated/magnified by classifying patterns of plural picture element data comprising plural adjacent columns in horizontal and vertical lines of an original image signal and controlling the size of the classification area based on the result of classification. CONSTITUTION:Plural picture element data in, e.g. 3X2 picture element areas in a 2nd area comprising plural adjacent columns in 7X2 picture element areas stored in a shift register 13 being a means storing, e.g. 7X2 picture elements in a 1st area are classified and the size of the 3X2 picture element area is controlled based on a pattern recognition result. Then interpolation is made depending on the result of recognition by using the plural picture element data in the 2nd area and a magnified picture element signal is formed by inserting interpolation picture element data between picture element data through the use of an interpolation arithmetic circuit 14 and an interpolation register 15. The register 13 conducts interpolation by using data of the 1st area read from line buffer memories 10a, 10b. |
