The reinforcement is formed by a metal profile that attaches to the frame of an existing window or door. A locking bolt can slide in the profile to engage with the fixed frame. A strip (25) with two angled ridges forming a wide 'V' is fixed to the window frame. The underside of the profile is shaped in a complementary 'V' (31) which can be slid along the strip, providing positive fixing for the profile. A chamber in the profile houses the locking bolt (39) and allows it to slide when released by a handle (40). The profile has outward facing chambers to accept the secondary glazing panel or shutter, and on the outer face to accept a decorative strip.
