PURPOSE:To obtain a high quality large capacity long distance wavelength multiplex communication system whose reception characteristic is made stable. CONSTITUTION:In the dispersion in an optical fiber just after a transmission optical amplifier 3 and relay amplifiers 6-1, 6-2, a negative dispersion is selected for an average dispersion over at least a half of a valid length and the dispersion of part of the remaining transmission lien or all of the line is selected so that the average dispersion in the entire transmission line is as less as possible with respect to a wavelength of a wavelength multiplex signal. Since crosstalk due to mixture of 4 optical waves resulting in deteriorating the transmission characteristic is suppressed, the stable wavelength multiplex transmission system is realized. |
