PURPOSE:To prevent influencing of discrination lines generated at the time of voltage impression on display quality by setting the value of the product of the double refractive index and the thickness of a liquid crystal layer near the edges of respective pixel electrodes at a specific value or below. CONSTITUTION:This liquid crystal display element is so formed that the product DELTAnd of the double refractive index DELTAn of liquid crystals and the thickness (d) of the liquid crystal layer near the electrode edges and the boundary between the divided boundaries for orientation where the discrination lines are liable to be generated attains <=0.25mum. The regions where an optically rotatory power is not exhibited attain a black state at all times in display in normal white display and the discrination lines are eventually invisible. The thickness d1 of the required liquid crystal layer is (d0-d2) if the thickness of the liquid crystal layer necessary for display is defined as d0, the thickness of the liquid crystal layer at which the pixel edges and the parts near the boundary between the divided regions for orientation are formed at <=0.25mum as d1 and the thickness of insulating layers as d2 and, therefore, the thickness d1 of the liquid crystal layer is determined by determining the double refractive index DELTAn of the liquid crystals of the liquid crystal layer. |
