Process for joining compact sintered ceramic bodies comprises: (a) only polishing the joining surfaces to unevenness < 0.5 mu m and roughness < 1 mu m; (b) using as foil when joining the ceramic bodies, a green ceramic foil, whose heat expansion coefft. does not deviate > 1x10<-6>/K from that of the ceramic body; (c) maintaining the foil in a 1st phase of a temp./time regime to gasify the binder and solvent under such a pressure between the joining surfaces so as to prevent movement of the joining surfaces and the foil; and (d) crystallising the foil in 2nd and 3rd phases of a temp./time regime under a pressure of at least 50 kPa so that the pressure remains below the max. pressure for the joining bodies. The green ceramic foil used in the process is also claimed.
