Self centering centre punch

The punch body (1) has a shaft (3) with a hardened and pointed tip (6) with behind it a circlip (5) held in a groove. Fitted so that it can slide axially on the shaft is a conical block which (4) is held against the circlip by compression spring (2) pressure. The tip and block are inserted into a hole pre-drilled in a component sheet beneath which is an undrilled sheet. By pressing or hitting the body downward the tip is driven into the lower sheet whilst being centralised by the block as it slides along the shaft.
