A method of producing a red fired clay body, the method comprising firing the clay body by fast firing to a peak firing temperature of around 1190 DEG C, retaining the body at or around said temperature; allowing the body to cool to an oxidation temperature of around 1030 DEG C and retaining the body at said temperature; allowing the body to cool to a colour development temperature within the range 925-975 DEG C and retaining the body at or around said temperature; and subsequently allowing the body to cool.
