The traction control allows the drive torque delivered by the engine to be reduced to restore drive traction when wheel spin is detected, by selective suppression of the fuel injection and adjustment of the ignition timing angle. At least one additional function, e.g. exhaust gas recycling, or fuel tank venting, is switched out of operation during the suppression of the fuel injection for drive torque reduction, with the additional function maintained in operation when the torque reduction is effected solely by adjustment of the ignition timing.
