In order to improve the convenience of operation of telescopic ladders and reduce the risk of accidents, guide caps (5) are proposed which are fitted on the upper ends of the individual telescopic sections and have an internal through aperture (6) fitting with the next higher section. There are bearers (8) on the inwardly facing outer wall (7) of the guide caps (5) for accepting or securing the rungs (10). At the lower ends of the sections there are plugs (13) having engagements means (28, 31) in the side-wall region penetrating into corresponding engagement apertures (29, 32) in the next lower sections and locking them in the extended position. The ladder can be collapsed in sections by releasing the individual engagement means (29, 32). With the arrangement of bearing slopes (33) in the guide caps (5), however, it is also possible for all the ladder sections to fit automatically into one another, provided that the lowest engagement device is released.
