Optical voice data transfer between recorders

A portable unit 1 records voice data from microphone 3 in a SRAM, EEPROM, flash memory or similar 10. When the portable equipment is placed alongside desk-top equipment 2, permanent magnet 21 closes reed switch 25 whereupon desk unit 2 activates electromagnet 24 to close reed switch 20 in the portable equipment. The contents of memory 10 in the portable unit 1 are then converted into optical form, transmitted to the desktop unit 2 and stored there in memory 10 which may be a flash memory, magnetooptical disk, or magnetic disk or tape. A variant of the desk-top equipment (fig 7) uses a semiconductor memory (103) in the first instance, from which the data is transferred for analog storage on magnetic tape (130). A switch (107) enables the contents of either memory to be reproduced audibly (112).
