A specular marker array 17 for mounting on an object such as a vehicle or building comprises a plurality of corner reflector assemblies 10, 11, 12 each having a narrow aperture in azimuth and a wide aperture in elevation. Each corner reflector assembly is operable to reflect back to a source any illuminating radiation of a predetermined wavelength which is incident upon it. Means 12, 13, 14, are provided for rotating each corner reflector assembly at a rate different from that of each other assembly about axes parallel to one another. Control means are provided to control the speed of rotation of each assembly and may be arranged to change said speeds of rotation as required. Each corner reflector assembly may consist of more than one reflector. Each reflector assembly may be mounted on an arm so that advantage may be taken of the Doppler effect. The array allows the object to be identified by a radar or lidar system.
