PURPOSE:To obtain a high-sensitivity sensor with simple constitution by detecting the intensity of the light emitted from a fiber for a sensor consisting of a transparent resin doped with an active dye which changes the absorptivity of a cladding material with the kinds of gases. CONSTITUTION:The fluorescent fiber 2 formed by using a resin essentially consisting of poly 4-methylpentene 1 as the cladding material and doping a perylene dye to polycarbonate which is a core material is connected to the fiber 1 for the sensor formed by immersing the clad part of the plastic fiber into 1-4 dioxane to remove said part, then depositing polyvinyl alcohol doped with a thymol blue dye thereon to several mum thickness. The sensor is so constituted that the the above-mentioned fiber 2 is excited by a halogen lamp 3. The intensity of the light emitted from the photoconductive fiber 4 is investigated and the concn. of gas is measured by using the fact that the absorptivity of the fiber 1 changes sensitively to the gas concn. On the other hand, the high-sensitivity sensor is formed by selecting the fibers corresponding to the gases to be inspected, i.e., the red any yellow fibers 2 respectively when the sensor is desired to be operated for gaseous NH3 and HCl. |
