<p>The process involves moulding the masks (20) in glass and forming an opaque coating on at least one surface (24). Assemblies of numbers of masks are moulded on the common base plate. The base plate is then cut to leave individual masks, each with a base mounting flange. The opaque coating is applied before or after the cutting step. The cutting step may be carried out by a high pressure water jet. The lamp (3), covered by the light mask, may be mounted in a reflector (2) base, with an overall outer glass envelope (4). The mask may have a hemispherical top (22), leading down to an approximately cylindrical shoulder (21), with a retaining flange (23).
