PURPOSE:To provide a new tetralin compound capable of forming a liquid crystal element having a broad working temperature range, a high switching speed, an extremely low power consumption and a stable contrast. CONSTITUTION:This new tetralin carboxylic acid ester is expressed by formula I {R is a 3-20C alkyl or a 3-20C polyfluoroalkyl; X is COO, OCO, O or single bond; A<1> is 1,4-phenylene, 4,4'-biphenylene, a group of formula II, 2,6-naphthylene, etc.; Y<1> is COO, OCO, CH2O or OCH2; Z is group of formula III to formula VII, etc.; R* is Q<1>-C*HQ<2>-Q<3> [Q<1> is (CH2)a; (a) is 0-6; Q<2> is CF3, CH3 or C2H5; Q<3> is a 1-10C alkyl or a 1-10C polyfluoroalkyl; Q<2> is different from Q<3>)]}. This new tetralin compound useful as an intermediate for the compound of formula I is expressed by formula VIII [R is H, a 1-20C alkyl, a 6-20C aryl or a 7-20C aralkyl; Z is group of formula III or formula IV; R' is H, a 1-20C alkyl, a 6-20C aryl or Q<1>-C*HQ<2>-Q<3> (Q<1> and Q<3> are each same as the group defined in formula I; Q<2> is H, CF3, CH3 or C2H5)]. |
