PURPOSE:To synthesize a sulfonic ester and a halide from an unsaturated alcohol. CONSTITUTION:The reaction of 2-butyne-3-ol with p-toluenesulfonyl chloride is carried out in a two-phase solvent system such as methylene chloride-water in the presence of a compound bearing two tertiary amine groups such as 4- dimethylaminopyridine to form the sulfonic ester, then the product is allowed to react with ammonium bromide to give 3-bromo-1-butyne.
