PURPOSE:To obtain a cation-exchange fiber of an excellent quality by mixing a vinyl polymer having a sulfonate group with a polyvinyl alcohol, spinning the mixture into filaments, and insolubilizing the polyvinyl alcohol component in the filaments. CONSTITUTION:A cation-exchange fiber made from a mixture of a vinyl polymer having a sulfonate group with a polyvinyl alcohol in a weight ratio of 20/80 to 85/15. This fiber is produced by forming a spinning dope containing the vinyl polymer and the polyvinyl alcohol in a weight ratio of 20/80 to 85/15 into filaments by dry spinning, stretching the filaments at a stretch ratio of 1-4, heat-treating the stretched filaments, and acetalizing them with an aldehyde such as formadehyde, glutaraldehyde or glyoxal. The polyvinyl alcohol which can be applied is one having a degree of saponification of 90mol% or above and an average degree of polymerization of 500 or above. Although the vinyl polymer is desirably water-soluble, it may be water-insoluble. |
