PURPOSE:To produce water-absorbing polyester fiber of high durability by applying a hydrophlicizing agent to thick-and-thin polyester fiber having a specific form. CONSTITUTION:Polyethylene terephthalate is melt-extruded, the undrawn yarn is drawn to give a thick-and-thin yarn having thick and thin parts in the fiber axis direction. The drawn yarn is subjected to the alkali-thinning treatment to form fine grooves extending perpendicularly to the fiber axis so that length of the fine grooves on the fiber surface is less than 70% of the outer peripheral length of the fiber, the width is less than 1mum, the groove number is 2-5 per 10mum in the fiber axis direction. Then, a hydrophilicizing agent mainly comprising polyalkylene glycol is applied to the fiber and they are treated in a liquid heated at 100-140 deg.C to give a water-absorbing polyester fiber having high durability, being firmly adhered with the hydrophilicizing agent, and excellent in fabric hand which is changeable with some extent of freeness. |
