PURPOSE:To avoid excessive turning of an engine and sudden deceleration due to an engine brake by preventing shifts to lower gears when the engine speed is less than the idle speed and less than the set speed, and maintaining the current gear. CONSTITUTION:When a control means 24, to which signals output from a throttle opening sensor 28, a vehicle speed sensor 30, a shift switch 34, an engine speed detecting means 44 and the like are input, starts its program, first it is determined whether or not the engine speed is less then the idle speed and less than the set speed (engine speed for judging failure). When the engine speed is not less than those speeds, judgment on shifts and a shift operation are carried out; when the engine speed is less than those speeds, the program is ended without the judgment on shifts and a shift operation, and the current gear is maintained. Thus the engine speed detecting means 44 is prevented from shifting to lower gears, avoiding excessive turning of the engine 2 and sudden deceleration due to an engine brake. |
