A laser ranging device and camera are installed in housing (26) on a support (17) on a block (25) at the free end of an arm (18) pivoted near one of its ends about two intersecting axes. The arm is movable by two linear actuators (9,10) each oriented at right angles to one of the axes. The position of each actuator and the distance traversed during an arm movement are measured continuously and used to calculate the direction and extent of the pivotal movement.
