In a typical heater, a heat-emitting panel (3), of e.g. fibre-reinforced polyester, carries a resistive circuit (1), under an insulating backing plate (2), on one side. On the other, exposed, side, the material presents a relief pattern, comprising an array of spikes or rods (4), preventing access to the main body. Contact can occur only on the extreme tips of the spikes, etc., and the area touched cannot exceed 50 percent of that obtained in similar contact on a plane surface. The protection provided depends on the material, the spike height (9) and the effective contact area reduction. Prototype tests show safe operating temperatures as high as 120 deg. C. are feasible.
