PURPOSE: To detect overloads or blocking states of an electric motor, such as a stepper motor. CONSTITUTION: The operating device for an electric motor 10 evaluates the overload or the blocking of a drive part 11 from the characteristic quantity of a current flowing through the electric motor 10. In a 1st constitution, the characteristic quantity is detected within a time interval in an operation connecting process after the start of the electric motor 10. In other constitution, the characteristic quantity is detected at a specific detection time with a specific delay time after the start.
