PURPOSE:To make display at a bright high contrast ratio without using a black matrix by providing the non-display region of at least one substrate with an insulating layer. CONSTITUTION:The region of the first substrate 10 including switching elements 21 is provided with the insulating layer 19 consisting of a photoresist. The insulating layer 19 is formed at a thickness slightly smaller than the overlapping spacing size of the first substrate 10 and the second substrate 15. As a result, the transmittance of the non-display region is made small and light leakage is prevented. Oriented films 23 are respectively formed on the second substrate 15 formed with a counter electrode 18 facing display electrodes 14, color filters 16 and a protective film 17 and the first substrate 10 formed with the display electrodes 14 and the switching elements 21. The substrate 10 and the substrate 15 are stuck to each other in such a manner that the specified spacing size is maintained. Liquid crystals are sealed into the spacing. Further, the substrates 10 and 15 are provided with polarizing plates 22 in such a manner that the axes of polarization intersect nearly with each other. |
