The process involves utilising a calculator linked to sensors of rotational speed (N), accelerator pedal depression (PP), coolant and intake air temps. (Te,Ta) and exhaust gas composition (lambda m) incorporating circuits for determining the optimal mixture (110), nominal throttle opening (111) and optimal fuel injection (112) from tables constructed at the design stage and interpolated in running. The measured composition is compared with the ideal to produce an error signal (delta lambda) for a controller (113) supplying a correction (delta alpha P) for the throttle opening. A discriminator (114) modifies the calculations in engine-braking mode.
