Battery charging device for multi-cell battery

The battery charging device has a number of identical parallel battery paths (22), each containing 2 or more sub-modules (231,...23m) comprising one or more parallel battery cells, connected one after the other. A detection stage (4) determines the number of fallen off battery paths and the max. number of fallen off battery cells within the sub-modules of the remaining battery paths, e.g. using the measured internal resistance compared to the internal resistance of an intact sub-module, for determining the charging current provided by the charging control (3).
