Method of making usable flight bar from worn flight bar, e.g. for face conveyor in longwall mining equipment

A method of restoring a worn flight bar 10 from e.g. a face conveyor in longwall mining equipment comprises a forging step which is used to displace material of the bar to fill in worn areas and restore them to substantially their original configuration. Such areas include the tip 32 and chain bits regions (12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, Figs. 1 and 2) (not shown) of the bar. The tip may be restored by forming or deepening pockets 33 adjacent thereto to obtain the displaced material. The bar may be induction heated prior to forging and heat treated subsequently. <IMAGE>
