A method of and an apparatus for electrolyzing water, in which electrolysis of water can be performed while effectively removing scales such as calcium carbonate, and by which electrode plates can be extended in service life on the order of several years. A step of electrolyzing water using an electrolytic cell of non-diaphragm type, and a step of applying voltage of inverse polarity between the electrode plates, in a state, in which supply of water into the electrolytic cell is suspended and water stays in the electrolytic cell, to solve in a stagnant water deposits, which has deposited on the electrode plates in the electrolyzing step, for removal are repeated. Since voltage of inverse polarity is applied in a state, in which water stays in the electrolytic cell, surfaces of the electrode plates are not influenced by turbulence and a layer of strong acid water generated on the surfaces of the electrode plates is not prevented from being washed away by a water flow. Accordingly, a layer of the strongest acid water is generated on the interfaces between the electrode plates and water to release calcium carbonate which has been deposited on the surfaces of the electrode plates in the step of electrolysis.
|
