A treatment plant for effluent water incorporates an inlet (16) for untreated water and an outlet (19) for the treated water separated by reaction chambers (12, 14, 16). The reaction chambers (10, 12, 14) are subdivided into a series of zones (22, 34). The first zone (22) has a biologically inert solid bed (24) and the second zone (34) has a biologically active granulate (32).
