The procedure consists of heating the sample in a non-oxidising atmos. in a number of stages, the first to a temp. below 200 degrees C for a predetermined time, then to a second temp. value at a rate of 1-12 degrees C/min., and finally to a third temp. of ≥ 800 degrees C. The temps. are used to determine three values (S1r, S2a and S2b) which are representative of hydrocarbon components in the sediment sample, and are used to deduce at least one petroliferous characteristic in the sample. The three values represent the presence of light, medium and heavy oil cpds., and once the third temp. has been reached the residue of the sample is burned off to determine a representative value of the quantity of organic carbon contained in it. <IMAGE> |
