The device has one or more transverse grooves (16) provided in the ballnut (10) in order to break the number of balls (14) held under load into at least two groups of smaller numbers. The groove is disposed radially in the ballnut body, and is sufficiently wide to accommodate at least one ball in its entirety and of such a diameter as to contain a ball to a sufficient extent inside the helical groove (18) of a ballscrew shaft (20).
