PURPOSE:To produce activated carbon which can deodorize a gas containing vapor of an isothiocyanic ester within a short time by carbonizing a carbonaceous raw material after forming the material into particles, activating the resultant material in an atmosphere containing steam at a specified content or less, and then cooling the material to a specified temperature or lower while keeping the atmosphere as it is, and making the material carry cerium oxide at a specified ratio. CONSTITUTION:A carbonaceous raw material is formed into a granular or honeycomb or fibrous shape and carbonized, the resultant material is activated in an atmosphere containing steam within 15vol.% content, and after that, the material is cooled to 300 deg.C to lower while the atmosphere being kept as it is and mode to carry 0.1-20wt.% of cerium oxide solely or cerium oxide together with other metal oxides (e.g. an iron oxide). The activated carbon produced in this way has excellent properties to adsorb and remove malodor of an isothiocyanic ester in a gas phase. For this season, the activated carbon is suitable as a deodorizing agent for the isothiocyanic ester, and which is used as a sterilizing agent in the case domestic electronic appliances are stored in a warehouse. The activated carbon can also be used as a general deodorizing agent. |
