PURPOSE: To obtain a non-toxic oxidation hair dye composition that gives color tone sufficiently fast to shampoo, light, bad weather, perspiration and a variety of other treatments to the hair. CONSTITUTION: This oxidative dye composition for keratinous fibers contains 2-(β-hydroxyethyl)-p-phenylenediamine as at least one oxidative dye precursor and a combination of 2-methylresorcin with resorcin as at least one coupler, or their acid adducts. The amount of 2-(β-hydroxyethyl)-p-phenylenediamine is 0.01-10 wt.%, preferably 0.05-5 wt.% and the 2-methylresorcin and resorcin are 0.01-5 wt.%, particularly 0.05-3 wt.%, respectively. The composition is applied to keratinous fibers and an oxidizing agent is added to the composition, or added simultaneously or continuously to the dyeing when the composition is used and the color is developed under alkaline, neutral or acidic conditions.
