PURPOSE:To industrially obtain beta-naphthoic acid in a single step and in extremely high selectivity by using a specific catalyst from naphthalene and carbon monoxide. CONSTITUTION:The objective beta-naphthoic acid is obtained by reaction between naphthalene and carbon monoxide in the presence of a rhodium-based catalyst at normal temperatures to 300 deg.C (esp. 50-200 deg.C) under normal pressures to 50atm (esp. 5-30atm). In this reaction, it is preferable that a copper-based compound (cupric salt) contributing to raising the yield of the beta-naphthoic acid, 1,10- phenanthroline for raising the selectivity for the beta-naphthoic acid and a carboxylic acid compound acting as a solvent (pref. trifluoroacetic acid) be used in combination with the above components. The molar ratios for the catalyst based on the naphthalene, the copper-based compound based on the catalyst, and the 1,10-phenanthroline based on the catalyst are 0.001-10, 0.01-100 (esp. 1-50), and 0.1-100 (esp. 1-80), respectively. |
