The cuts are formed in a regular pattern in the tape, and they can be inclined to a plane at right angles to the tape surface. The lugs can be movable between a first stable retracted position in which they cannot be felt and a second protruding position forming the characters. A punch is used to bring the lugs into the protruding position. The punch can be solenoid-operated. An indexing hole can be provided in the tape at each gap between adjacent cuts. This is detected by a photoelectric cell. The tape can be stretched in the lengthwise direction, causing the lugs to spring back into the retracted position.
