A suction nozzle 1 for removing ballast from a railway track bed has openings 3, 4 situated opposite one another on either side of a track conductor 7. A covering strip 10 may be positioned above the track conductor. Each suction opening may be constituted by a rubber pipe stub 18 connected by a quick-action fastening such as a clamping band 19 to suction pipes 5, two of which are connected to a main suction pipe 2. The nozzle may be configured to accommodate two track conductors (11, fig. 6), and may comprise two independent suction pipes with confronting ends defining the suction openings (fig. 9). The ballast can be removed by suction laterally without disturbing the track conductor. Further embodiments are illustrated in figs. 4 and 5. <IMAGE>
