Sepn. of fumaric acid (FA), maleic acid (MA) and/or succinic acid (SA) from aq. solns. contg. malic acid (I) as main component comprises column chromatography on a stationary phase having higher affinity for the impurities than for (I). The mobile phase, i.e. aq. (I) soln., is applied to the column and (I), which initially binds, is displaced by the impurity acids, producing an eluate practically free of such acids. The collection of eluate continues until at least one impurity breaks through.
