In a circular braiding machine with two groups of spools (31, 38) circulating about an axis of rotation (1) in opposite directions of rotation, the strands (32, 37) are crossed by means of strand guide members (48) which are mounted to reciprocate on guide tracks (49) arranged in substantially radial planes relative to the axis of rotation (1) and which are driven by levers (50) which are arranged substantially in the extensions of the guide tracks (49) at the points of reversal of the guide members (48) and are articulated in the manner of connecting rods at one end to the guide members (48) and at the other end to rotating crank levers (52). The levers (52) are driven to give the guide members a modified sinusoidal motion with faster travel when the strands are crossing. To achieve this the pivot of each lever may be rotated in one direction while a cam engaging a slot in the lever is rotated in the opposite direction. Alternatively a rack-driven oscillatory frame may superimpose an oscillating motion on the rotary motion of a gear to which the lever is fixed. <IMAGE>
