The invention concerns the use, in non-linear optics, of naphthalene derivatives of formula (I) in which rings A and B may be fused each other, X is nitrogen or a group of the formula CH or CH=CH-CH: Z is a heterocyclic group and, in the case when X is a CH=CH-CH group, may also be a 5- or 6-membered aromatic carbocyclic ring; and R<1>, R<2> and R<3> are hydrogen, C1-C4 alkyl or C5-C7 cycloalkyl. The invention also concerns the methine dyes of the above formula.
