The carriers (FT) via at least one height-accessible deflection of the conveyor (FE) circulate in at least two planes. The sorting containers (SB) are laid out in at least two layers (ET1,ET2) in the planes (E1,E2) of the conveyor (FE). Each conveyor has a fixed wall part and a movable wall part. The movable wall part in a closed position forms together with the fixed wall part a U or V-shaped cross-section reception pocket for the mail. The movable wall part, in a discharge position, together with the fixed wall part, forms a downwardly open removal slot for the mail.
