Varicose vein ligation procedure

Small implants with suitable applicators or injectors are inserted without opening the skin so as to compress the small surface vessels, using refined steel or elastic hypoallergenic plastics. Preferred implants come in vessel-compressing clip or clamp form, inserted in the skin together with the appropriate applicators or injectors. This method is suitable for the treatment of reticular varicose veins, telangiectasia, naevi flammei, haemangioma. The clips as inserted enclose the vessels to give a localised long-term tie-off, or again the implants can be so small as to be indiscernible. Assuming the vessels to be 2 mm at most in diameter, the clip crosspiece is at most 3 mm in width, using clip wires of a few tenths of mm in diameter. Implants injected from the surface must remain in place for a long period as compressive fibrous closure can take some time for full effect.
