A transmission control system for a transmission of a vehicle comprising a torque converter clutch (44); a forward clutch (76); a ratio drive establishing means (77) which is selectively operable; and a hydraulic control comprising a shift valve (64) for directing control fluid pressure from a controlled source (34) to the forward clutch when the ratio drive establishing means is not operated and to a torque converter clutch control valve (46) when the ratio drive establishing means is operated; a pressure regulating valve (74) positioned between the shift valve and the controlled source for controlling an engagement pressure of the forward clutch as required according to throttle and brake signals when the ratio drive establishing means is not operating and for controlling an engagement pressure of the torque converter clutch when the ratio drive establishing means is operated; and a solenoid controlled pressure regulator (56) for controlling the control fluid pressure directed by the shift valve in response to brake and throttle signals. <IMAGE>
