Reactive Blue 19 of formula (I) comprises reacting bromamic acid (1-amino-4-bromo-9,10-anthraquinone-2- sulphonic acid) (II) with 3-(sulphatoethylsulphonyl)-aniline (III) or the thiosulphate analogue in the presence of Cu and a phosphate buffer and isolating the prod.; Z = -CH2CH2-OSO3M, -CH=CH2 or -CH2CH2-SSO3M; and M = H or an alkali metal.
