The air bag is inflated by an elongated cylindrical body (60) of ignitable gas-generating material, having a central cavity in which a body (160) of pyrotechnic material is located, being easier or more rapid to ignite than the gas-generating material. The pyrotechnic material produces and emits combustion prods. which ignite the gas-generating material. The pyrotechnic material may be in the form of a plug or a filling. The combustion chamber (64) of the inflation device contains separate bodies (110) which make up the elongated gas-generating cylinder.
