The cooker provides a heating power commensurate with the amount of the food being cooked so as to efficiently simmer the food, when the food in a cooking vessel is brought to a boil. A gas table (A) is characterized by a time control means (32), which, when a boil detecting means (31) detects the boiling state of the food (11) being cooked such as stew in a cooking vessel, e.g. pot (12), activates a M burner (13) to perform its burning operation in a manner wherein, if it takes less than 24 seconds for the detecting means to detect a temperature rise of the food from 80 deg.C to 90 deg.C, fire is turned alternately low for 20 seconds and high for 3 seconds and wherein, if it takes not less than 24 seconds, the fire is turned alternately low for 20 seconds and high for 5 seconds.
