BENZYL ETHER DERIVATIVE AND COMPOSITION CONTAINING THE SAME

A benzyl ether derivative represented by general formula (I) and useful as a liquid crystal display material; a liquid crystal composition containing the same; and a liquid crystal display made therefrom, wherein A represents 4-alkylcyclohexyl or alkyl; and B represents di- or trifluorophenyl, 4-(di- or trifluorophenyl)phenyl, 4-alkylphenyl or 4-alkoxyphenyl. This compound (I), being well compatible with other compounds, can be combined with various liquid crystal materials to give a liquid crystal composition. It can not only lower the C-N point of a liquid crystal composition and increase the dielectric anisotropy to reduce the threshold voltage, but also can lower the viscosity of a liquid crystal composition and raise the N-I point. In addition, it can, when appropriately selected, change the refractive index anisotropy, and is usable with advantage for improving the characteristics of a liquid crystal composition for TN, ST or active liquid crystal displays.
