The spreader is placed on the ground. It has two, long, parallel side pieces (1,2). Each piece is higher than the layer of material which is required. A cross piece (10) joins them at a height equal or greater than the required layer to form a rigid frame. There is a thickness gauge (15) which runs between the two side pieces. Its lower edge (17) is placed at the required thickness. The bituminous mix is prepared in a mobile mixer (30) with a hinged arm (33) ending in a pouring bucket (31, 32). The mix is poured onto the ground between the side pieces in front of the thickness gauge. The bucket is rested on the frame and/or on the thickness gauge to press the spreader against the ground. The machine pulls the device along the ground. The thickness gauge (17) levels the mix between the side sections to form a strip (35) of material which is of the required thickness and the same width as the distance between the side pieces. The bucket is then lifted and the process is repeated until the strip is the required length.
