The oboe body is formed with two holes defining first (2) and second (3) octaves, with a first mechanism actuated by an octave key (4) for opening a cover of the second octave hole. A second mechanism (16-24) is actuated in response to movement of one note hole cover (15) to open the first octave hole while closing the second. A third mechanism (28-35) is actuated by a second octave pad (27) to open the second octave hole while closing the first, in response to movement of both the first and second mechanisms. The first mechanism includes a spring (14) biassing the second octave hole cover towards an open position, unless it is blocked by a stop (20) associated with a second stronger spring (33).
