A non-invasive inspection system employs the anisotropic, resonant scattering of neutrons from an object (16) to determine the presence of at least one preselected element therein. A monoenergetic neutron beam (14) is impinged onto the object (16) and a first detector (18) is disposed to detect neutrons (22) resonantly scattered by the preselected element. A second detector (20) is disposed to detect non-resonantly scattered neutrons (24). Comparison of the signals from the two detectors (18, 20) is indicative of resonant scattering and hence presence of the preselected element.
