Cationic amphiphiles are provided that are alkyl or alkoxyalkyl O-phosphate esters of diacylphosphatidyl zwitterionic compounds such as phosphatidylcholine or phosphatidyl ethanolamine. The amphiphiles can be use d as carriers for delivering macromolecules intracellularly.
