A numerical control system is provided for controlling a machine tool, the control system comprising control means (12, 13) and an external portable storage means (1) for storing data. Read/write means (20) become operable when the external portable storage means (1) is manually connected thereto. Data is read from the external portable storage means (1) and can be written onto the portable storage means. Furthermore, means are provided for generating work operation data which comprises records of the operations performed by the machine tool as well as a personal work record of the operator of the machine tool. The control means (12) also comprise an operation recording memory (23) for storing the work record data.
